Moonrise
The Story
The Lord’s voice said, “Let the moon rise.”
And so the angel took hold of his golden rope and pulled.
Slowly, the moon emerged from the deep darkness, its pale face catching the light of heaven. The rope grew taut in his hands, and his great wings spread above the clouds. He pulled again, lifting its silver glow toward a world waiting below.
“Higher,” came the gentle voice.
And the angel obeyed.
Over sleeping mountains and quiet rivers, moonlight began to fall. It slipped through windows, rested upon empty chairs, and touched the faces of those who could not sleep.
Still the angel pulled, until the moon shone above the tallest peaks. Below him, a child paused at a window. A weary traveler found the road. Someone who had been crying stepped outside and lifted their face to the sky.
The Lord had seen them all.
When the moon reached its place among the stars, the angel loosened his hands. For a moment he rested upon his cloud, watching the rivers carry silver through the valleys.
Then the Lord spoke once more.
“Let it shine.”
And the angel smiled, for now he understood why he had been asked to lift the moon.
