The Story

Where Courage Sails

The shore had long since disappeared, and the sea offered no promise of an easy passage.

Above the rolling waves, white sails gathered the wind. The old ship leaned into its journey, her timbers creaking, her bow rising and falling through the deep green water. Gulls wheeled overhead, their cries briefly heard above the rush of the sea.

Everyone aboard carried something unseen. A hope. A worry. The memory of someone waiting at home.

At the helm, the captain watched the clouds. He could not quiet the ocean or know what lay beyond the horizon. But he knew his ship, and he trusted the hands that worked beside him.

A wave broke against the bow. Water swept across the deck, and a young sailor caught his breath.

Then he tightened his grip on the rope and looked up. The sails still held. Onward they went.

By evening, a narrow light appeared beneath the clouds. It touched the canvas sails and turned their weathered edges gold. For a moment, every face aboard lifted toward it.

There was still a long way to go, but the young sailor no longer watched for the vanished shore.

He watched the horizon.

And when the wind called again, he was ready.
